Remote Working Part 3 – My list of essentials
self management more….
Before I show you my arsenal of my favourite net tools that almost certainly help you to operate remotely, I want to discuss one more pearl of wisdom related to self management and specifically to do with maintaining your focus and levels of concentration
I’ve spotted and verified a common trait in members of both sexes who work on the net and I’ve known for over a long time line and I call this habit the 50 min rule. I observed these colleagues who apply themselves and work for 50 minutes and then always take a complete 10 minute rest and are considerably more productive and produce a substantially greater quality of work than friends who don’t have similar working practises.
OK as promised here is my list of favourite remote working software:
Electronic Mail
Google Mail has a price tag of zero. My friends and I all agree the search & label (a bit like folders) mechanisms are second to none. The only disadvantage so far is that I have seen it run quite slowly on lower spec.computers
Phone calls
Skype continually perplexed me as the connection performance was unacceptable, but a big pat on the back for the geeks at Skype now as they have really improved the quality of the service. For few dollars a month Skype lets me call and conference in any telephone and Skype user on Earth. The current version of Skype has a mass of excellent features and there are now plenty of of practical add ons.
Organising Content
Evernote has acquired in excess of a million users in no time at all – it lets you to store, organise and annotate any type of digital media up on the Internet. Just go check it out…it’s free.
Invoicing, Time and Expenses capture, Accounting and CRM
You almost certainly know that my dream to work remotely was originally encouraged by Quickbooks Online, a small business accounting software web application. But it is no match for the free edition of salesorder.com – a lead to cash system that’s as easy to use as a pencil I looked at NetSuite whose pricing (and people) scared me off. My choice here is salesorder.com – Go check it out.
Remote Working Part 2 – Tips on self management
The most cited reason members of both sexes fail to succeed at working remotely is they don’t see the essential requirement of good quality organisation and robust self management.
I have been working remotely for nearly 8 yrs since I first unearthed Quickbooks online an ‘on demand’ small business accounting software service and was spellbound by the fact that if you can perform accounting on the web then why shouldn’t it be workable to perform other key types of of work remotely?
Whilst working remotely has substantial gains there are numerous traps that people easily fall into which evolve into problems that result in cuts in productivity and lower motivation. The major reason for low effectiveness in remote employees is distraction and it is a proven and well known fact that it can take a worker up to 20 mins to return to their original efficiency level after experiencing a distraction.
Deeper insights reveal that persons who are continuously affected by disturbances are more likely to be susceptible to reduced memory capability and are prone to developing mental health trouble in later life. We exist in an over communicated environment and it is imperative that you recognise the issues this causes before you begin working remotely. Whilst working remotely you have to do everything feasible to remove the jeopardy of being distracted.
Here are my most important tips:
1, Get a routine, make sure that everybody knows it and stick to it!
Good examples are a consistent time of day when you review or write and send e-mail and make or be available for phone conversatiions. Before I began working remotely I used to get up to a couple of hundred electronic mails a day. Now I think I am unfortunate if I get more than 4. To ’reset’ my e-mail experience I modified my e-mail address and tenaciously took steps to guard the details being passed on to anyone. I then made sure every person who I gave my e-mail address to, to use it with special care. I also created an automatic response that swiftly told anyone sending me mail my schedule for attending to mail and if someone required my immediate awareness to mark it as ‘Urgent’.
2. Get rid of alerts.
Disable every function that can send you a perceptible alert. This includes cell and
conventional telephones and forms of alerts from e-mail such as on screen pop ups, beeps, display changes to your inbox list and of course facing a window. Get a door on your office and put up a ‘do not disturb’ sign on it.
In ‘Remote Working Part 3 – The ‘kit’ list’ I will reveal my favourite tools and software.
Remote Working Part 1 – Beginners guide (Overview)
Obviously not everybody can work remotely as lots of careers require people to go to their office or travel to undertake their work face to face. But for those of us who are able to work remotely then I thought it would be useful to share what I have learned and share some practical wisdom by writing and publishing it on the net with the sole objective of providing helpful timesavers for adapting to remote working or managing remote workers.
I must tell you you that there are many people on the web who will try and make you purchase online education for large sums of cash, trust me you don’t have to do this.
I am fortunate to be allowed to work wherever I choose and just about everyone who asks me what job I do wants to understand how I am able to work remotely. Don’t misinterpret me I am still developing the science of remote working as everyday I discover people on the web who teach me new methods and I am continually unearthing new packages and approaches that make my life simpler and improve my productivity.
In the past seven years I have steadily adapted my working practices to enable me to do the whole of my work remotely with a kit of web tools and rigid self discipline. One day whilst exploring the web I uncovered Quickbooks online and this brought to my attention what just might be possible. My discovery of ’hosted’ ‘on demand’ small business accounting software was a life changing event for me and the beginning of my ‘remote working journey’.
I have got to tell you up front that proficiently working remotely is as much about the systems as it is about self management. Working remotely also means stating to your colleagues, managers and customers as to what they can expect and how they will keep in touch with you.
In ‘Remote Working Part 2 – Best practises’ I talk about how to focus.

Getting back with your EX
It is all very exciting that your ex is showing you a little bit of interest and you can tell there is flirting going on, it is fine to hold on to hope but avoid racing on ahead. Are you asking yourself does my ex want to get back with me?
The attention the long looks they give when they think you are not looking is an excellent sign they want you back in their lives. Sometimes even if you are desparate to get back with your ex you will need to slow things down and enjoy the courting stages. The old cat and mouse game will work because for as long as time man is the hunter, and the thrill is in the chase. If you simply jump into things full force, then you may find your ex pushing you back again, because we all know it can be a cat and mouse game. In fact, if your ex is giving indications that he or she wants you back, then the odds are, it was you playing hard to get that led to the renewed interest in the first place. That is why when this happens enjoy the flirting and the attention while at the same time a little distant is good.
When the break up occurs it is like a death you are grieving for that person and missing each other, and just want to get back together. Sometimes this can be true especially if you and your partner have been with each other for over 12 months. Your ex is probably going to miss you no matter what, because of how many memories were shared together during this period of time. All sorts of emotions are coming into play including regrets from the past. If you are wondering does my ex want to get back with me the odds are that your ex may be thinking the same thing for the same reasons. If I can share with you a tip it is to give them space to get their thoughts together.
With an ex they sometimes toy with your emotions and just seeing how far they can push your buttons, to them it is just a game. The sad part at times is that they can see you love them and they are just toying with you to get attention, without wanting to get back with you. Sometimes though you really need to check are they really interested in you or just marking time because no other prospects are in the horizon. Hopefully their intentions are honourable and don’t see the moment to get back at you for something they thought you did wrong. This is why it is important not to jump the gun, and why you should focus on reading into the situation before you act on it. When they are thinking of the history you had together they are reliving different moments evaluating situations and thinking they weren’t all bad. Quiet times on their own will have them replaying in their minds of all the times and special moments you had together were often great!
This is common, and a lot of people find themselves wondering do I really want to get the ex back?, but the truth is, its better to get a feel for the situation before you act. I believe if you are a little aloof it will help keep your emotions in tact, if you go full steam ahead they will run for the hills.
Collect your thoughts, read and rebuild your fragile confidence at the moment and most important is to let them miss you just a little. When they do ring or call keep it light catch up but keep it short don’t get all heavy the first meeting.
Spending quality time together and building this up gradually will help you to connect with you.

Time Management for Students
Time management for students is something which is rarely, if ever, taught in school by teachers.
Yet is one of the most beneficial tools that students can develop during their study years, and this will become an important and useful skill for your life well after school is over. It is automatically expected that students will be alble and capable to balance every aspect of their demands on time. This includes researching, studying, writing, socializing and of course sporting activities, and yet all too often students procrastinate those activities which they feel unsure of. No doubt, they are simply incapable of managing their time effectively. Along with that, it comes as no surprise that their efficeincy is low, and this can bring about a decrease in their self esteem and their confidence in their abilities. The sad thing is, they then go on to produce sub standard work far below what they could achieve.
Whats students need is to be able to strike a delicate balance between the various demands, without sacrificing those aspects of their lives which do not have to do with studying. Time management for students is about being able to provide an ability to manage all the conflicts on their time. Of course, any method still has to be realistic.
Indeed, only realistic strategies of time management for students are likely to ever be successful. What is the most common reason given by students for why they have abandoned a plan that had been drawn up? Once the plan is drawn up, students then believe that that is the ened of the process, and that all issues will magially dissapear. It is important to note that simply drawing up a plan soes not mean that anything will get done. It is a process which must be on-going, frequently monitored and adhered to honestly if it is to achieve the positive outcomes necessary.
Another source of time management issues is that technology tries to help us with such things as personal digital assistants, time plannets, graphic organisers and such. They can easily start to form a distraction. This only adds to the already problematic procrastination for which students are so renowned.
Teachers can help their students to understand the management of their time by developing and maintaining a class calendar. This draws attention to the amount of time available, and showing how larger tasks can be broken into smaller, more easily manageable ones. Most students also find that it is more beneficial to have three tiers of organization – short term, medium term and long term. Goal setting is important for long term understanding of “what it’s all for”. This aids focus and general direction, whereas the short term planning needs to be much more immediate and detailed.
Any system of time management for students must be simple to develop and maintain, simple to understand and realistically achievable. The main key must be in eliminating the tendency to procrastinate, which is the student’s worst enemy. Ultimately, schools would benefit from introducing time management as a taught discipline. This would empower students to take more control over their studies and lives, and improve the overall performance of the establishment.
